Dangerous E. Coli Levels Shut Detroit's Belle Isle Beach

In the final stretch of summer, people have one less beach to go to -- at least temporarily.

Detroit's Belle Isle Park beach was closed Thursday due to elevated levels of the bacteria E. coli.

"Recent samplings at Belle Isle have shown levels of E. coli that are above safe swimming levels," the city health department tweeted. "The DNR has closed Belle Isle and posted signs advising visitors not to swim. The beach will remain closed until sample results show safe E. coli levels."

Belle Isle is one of five beaches in the state that are temporarily closed because of contamination. A "contamination advisory" is issued for three others.
